Walthamstow Marshes are wet for much of the year, and the paths turn to deep, dark mud by midwinter. Short-coated dogs such as Whippets and Lurchers simply need a rinse and a rub down, but thicker coats hold the mud, so brush it out once it dries and before you wash.
The edge of Epping Forest gives dogs plenty of woodland to explore, which means ticks and grass seeds are a real possibility in the warmer months. After a forest walk, run your hands over your dog's body, and check between the toes and inside the ears. If you find a tick, remove it with a proper tool, or ask your vet.
Many of the dogs in the area are Cockapoos, Cavapoos and other curly crosses, which need regular grooms and daily tidy-ups at home. Walthamstow's busy Hoe Street means plenty of grooming options, but it is worth asking how long dogs wait in the salon and whether they are left alone with a dryer.
Lloyd Park has a large play area and open lawns, and the walk from the village keeps pads and nails reasonably short. Still, dewclaws, which sit higher on the leg, are never worn down by walking, so ask your groomer to check these every time.

- Note your dog's coat type, how often it tangles and what it finds hard, such as the dryer, clippers or having its feet touched.
- Ask each groomer you consider how they dry, how long dogs are in the salon and what they do when a dog becomes upset.

Good questions
Before you begin.
How do I clean off marsh mud?
Let it dry, brush it out and then bathe if needed. Brushing wet mud can drag it deeper into the coat.
Should I check for ticks after forest walks?
Yes. Feel along the skin, especially around the head, neck and feet, and speak to your vet about tick prevention.
Why do dewclaws need extra care?
They do not touch the ground, so they can grow into a curl. A groomer will include them when clipping nails.
